2025/26 Merit Scholarship Recipient: Jerry Shih

How/why did you choose your major?

I have loved films since childhood and wanted to learn as much as possible about this wonderful art form. I want to create films that are both entertaining and educational.

Describe the work you submitted for merits.

I submitted an art history paper, The Symbolism of Barbed Wire in the Work of Five African American Artists.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I wanted to learn as much as possible about filmmaking, and MCAD's filmmaking major offered exactly what I was seeking.

What are your plans for your senior year? And beyond?

I'm looking forward to working on my senior film project, and I hope to volunteer at the MSP Film Society. After graduation, I would like to collaborate with others in the film industry to create films that inspire, entertain, and educate.

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

Interacting with fellow students and faculty. Interesting assignments that tap into my creativity.

What inspires you?

Beauty in all forms - art, music, film, nature. Thoughtful and meaningful works of art.

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment?

I'm reading an amazing sci-fi/fantasy novel called Point of Hearts by one of my favorite authors, Melissa Scott.
