Describe the work you submitted for merits.

This year for the merit scholarship competition I wanted to focus on showing versatility. I also wanted to submit new work, all pieces being created in the past year of classes. Pieces include branding, animation, type design, publication design, poster/ promotional pieces, and more abstract design work. Although I submitted a vast range of work, all the pieces are tied together through my obsession with typography and funky color.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

MCAD was actually the only school I applied to after my gap year(s....). I was desperate for change, creativity, and a future plan after returning from traveling. I've shared this story so many times, but when I was leaving my backpacking trip I was so close to missing my flight, I missed the bus to the airport, couldn't check my bag, and was SPRINTING to the gate. I decided at that moment if I made my flight home I would pursue my design education at MCAD, if I missed my flight I would stay in Amsterdam. I'm glad to say I made my flight but hope to return to Amsterdam sometime after graduation.

What are your plans for senior year?

I'm ecstatic when I think about my creative life after MCAD. I'm filled with passion, hope, and dedication to living a creative life. I am planning on returning to the east coast this summer for the second round of interning as a studio assistant, where I will also be doing design work. Next fall will be my final semester at MCAD where I'm hoping to present an experimental and installation-based senior project, along with continuing to connect with my peers and creative community. After I graduate I am planning on moving to New York City to pursue my design career.

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

Constantly creating.

What's the best thing you've gotten from MCAD's free shelf?

My studio is right by the free shelf so I've been accumulating many treasures. Recent finds include a pair of Air Force 1's, many cute outfits, over 6 gallons of wall paint, and an illustrated playboy.

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by experimentation, tradition, and trend.

Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!

I'm very partial to and proud of Animal Love. This was my first attempt at frame-by-frame animation, and as a graphic designer who loves print, it was both challenging and satisfying to work and feel successful in a new medium. I also got to collab with my best friend/ partner on the sound and voice design which brought the project to the next level.

What advice would you give your past self?

Break all the rules.
