Where are you from?

Taiwan

What inspired you to pursue your MFA at MCAD, and how has studying here shaped your artistic practice?

The interdisciplinary nature and the mentorship system of the program! It allows me to explore different mediums and techniques while having good guidance in the MN art scene.

How has living and creating in Minneapolis influenced your work compared to your home country?

The twin cities' art scene feels more community-based and engaged in people's daily lives compared to back home in Taiwan. I think it challenges me to think about how my work can exist in different places and how they can benefit different kinds of people, rather than simply being hung on gallery walls.

What unique perspectives do you feel you bring to the MFA program as an international artist?

If you want me to say... I guess I bring a certain straightforward attitude to the program because I often speak my own mind and push people to have more open conversations about sensitive topics rather than avoiding them.

What challenges and rewards have you found in adapting to a new cultural environment while studying art?

The rewards stand out to me more, especially how people here are often genuinely interested in what you do as an international art student. That kind of attitude is so rewarding, and it feels like spiritual food for me to continue creating new artwork.

What advice would you give to other international artists considering studying at MCAD?

Prepare to do a lot of talking and have a lot of conversation about your work with both people inside and outside of the school. It's exhausting but also really rewarding, especially when you meet the right people.
