Logotype: Vector Lettering (Online)

Calligraphic, beautiful and artistic handwritten logotypes are a powerful branding tool. Create a branding logo, first ideating in analog, then creating digitally and applying to a final piece. Open to ages 16 and above.

Course description

Start by experimenting with ink on paper before vectoring letters in Adobe Illustrator. Learn the elements and techniques of both vector and point structures to create a wordmark with authentic calligraphic flavoring. Logos are created in black and white and applied to a digital branding piece of each student’s choice. / Students will have access to the Adobe Creative Suite throughout the course.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This online class is synchronous. Students will meet together online on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m-8:30 p.m. CT using Google Meet for lectures, demonstrations, class discussions, exercises, time to ask questions and share resources, and work time. The instructor will hold office hours for 1 hour after each class meeting to answer questions and provide individualized feedback and guidance.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required. Previous experience with Adobe Illustrator is required. Example skills include the basic use of the pen tool, anchor points, and handles.

Required materials

Supplies for first day

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook

Additional Supplies needed throughout the course

  • sketching tools such as markers and pencils
  • calligraphy tools including pointed and broad nib pen tips, Pilot Parallel pens, Tombow or other brush pens, paintbrushes
  • black ink for dip pens (like semi or Pelican)
  • eraser
  • white-out
  • scissors
  • tape (artist tape or removable tape recommended)
  • white non-bleeding sketch paper
  • tracing paper

A complete materials list will be discussed at the first class meeting. Students should expect to spend approximately $25 on supplies in addition to course tuition.

Hardware
A computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software, with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

This class uses Adobe Creative Cloud and Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system. Please see the link for more information.
