Clip and snip, crease and curl, mix and match, stick and attach! In this class, students exercise their imaginations and explore fun and fanciful 3-D paper collage techniques. Ages 6–9 Students look at and discuss contemporary paper sculpture, pop-up books, paper dolls, and also historical assemblages by artists like Pablo Picasso, Joseph Cornell, and Alexander Calder. Students learn about concepts such as balance, overlapping, pattern, and texture while creating various 3-D collages with cardboard, painted and patterned papers. For inspiration, the class takes a mini-field trip to see artworks featuring collage and assemblage at The Minneapolis Institute of Art. The week culminates in a stand-up display of the young artists’ paper sculpture creations. No class on Wednesday of this week. Open to students ages 6-9.
