Applying fundamental practices of drawing and visual storytelling, students will conceptualize, design, and complete a short story utilizing sequential art. The course focuses on structuring narrative through multiple iterations, including writing; establishing story beats; character development; rough layout; and finished storytelling through illustrations. Lecture and discussion will center on examples from comics, film, and animation, with demos focusing on techniques and best practices. Production of a final portfolio will include demonstration of process and a complete short story told through a comic, storyboard, or other sequential illustrations. / Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.

Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. Previous experience with Adobe Photoshop helpful, but not required.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; USB drive or cloud storage option for saving work; inking tools; straight edge (ruler or triangle); erasers; bristol board. A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
