This course incorporates research, ideation, and application within large-scale branding, publications, signage, mapping projects, and identity systems. Students investigate conceptual possibilities utilizing research; knowledge of historical and contemporary perspectives; experimental strategies using hand tools and digital software; and personalized design methodologies. Identification of real-world challenges and typographic solutions are explored through professional experiences with external designers. The assignments challenge students to develop and apply visual sensibilities through original solutions. Projects are designed to advance the understanding of how typography can be used to articulate meaning as it relates to a variety of topics including typographic and language systems, identity, conceptual narratives, and sequential implementation. / Open to students ages 18 and above. / View complete policies.

Pre-requisites: Experience using Adobe Creative software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). Previous graphic design experience strongly recommended.

How does an online course work at MCAD?

Most online courses are asynchronous, meaning that there are no set class meeting times. Instead, courses are project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week, and students can choose a time and place that works best for them to complete the work. Please note that this course will include a weekly online synchronous meeting on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. CST. Course activities may include readings; video demonstrations and tutorials; online discussions; projects; and critiques. The workload of an online course is roughly 8-10 hours per week, whether the course is being taken for credit or noncredit.
