Teen Painting: Tools and Techniques

This introductory class is designed to provide an overview of painting fundamentals. Students will be exposed to a variety of approaches and techniques from past to present with a focus on color theory and the act of painting from observation. Instruction will be driven by live demonstrations, lectures and one-on-one coaching, but the majority of this class will consist of studio time. Utilizing water based and acrylic mediums, students will be given the opportunity to explore a range of subject matter and techniques in pursuit of creating finished pieces for their expanding portfolios. / Materials fee of $5 in addition to class tuition. /  Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $75-100 in total for materials (not included in tuition). / Open to students ages 15–18. Prerequisites: Previous drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; two sheets of at least 20 x 30" good quality drawing or mixed media paper (150 lb or heavier), examples include: Arches cover, Rives BFK, Canson, Mi-Teintes, or Stonehenge; four pre-primed canvas boards or pre-stretched canvas for acrylic painting size 9 x12” up to 18” x 24” (a variety of sizes is best); A set of basic acrylic paints. MUST include: black, white, red, yellow and blue. (suggested brands: Golden, Liquitex, Blick, Winsor Newton, Utrecht); variety pack of synthetic acrylic paint brushes (should contain: round, filbert, bright or flat brushes); plastic palette; disposable palette paper pad; palette knife; three drawing pencil (HB, 4B, 2H); Pink Pearl eraser; roll of white artist’s tape; rags; cup or jar for water; plastic straw; chopstick or skewer. Optional but helpful: metal ruler, xacto knife, acrylic retarder, acrylic medium (semi-gloss), spray bottle

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity, comfortable footwear for standing.
