Pre-College Studio Intensive: Comic Art and Hand-Drawn Animation

In this weeklong intensive, high school students will explore the majors of comic art and animation. Comic art and animation share a common language and some techniques, but each offer unique artistic opportunities and challenges. In this class students will engage in hands-on demonstrations and assignments, and participate in class discussions designed to hone their skills, ideas, and critical thinking skills. The comic art section will focus on developing narrative skills; drawing techniques including lettering, character design, and expressive figure drawing; and establishing basic knowledge in order to pursue comic creation in the future. The animation portion of this class will offer an introduction to hand-drawn animation, covering basic techniques and concepts. Students will use aspects of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects to bring their animations to life. Students will dig into the fundamentals of animation by learning about frame rate and basic animation principles, such as squash and stretch, ease-in/ease-out, anticipation, and more. Students will have an opportunity to watch all of the animations created together at the end of class and take home copies of finished work. / This class will have a 30 minute unsupervised lunch break. / Materials fee of $40 in addition to class tuition. / Open to students ages 15–18.
