Photographic Narrative

Do you want your photographs to tell a story? The stories a photograph can tell are as varied as the artists who create them. Whether you focus on documentary, tableau, portraiture, or any other subject matter or photographic approach, this class will help you discover the narrative potential of your photographs.

During the class, students will break down the implied narrative of the single image; explore the relationship of text and image; as well as the relationships of multiple images to construct narratives through photographic essay, photo books, and time-based works. Students will have the opportunity to critically examine the medium through historical and contemporary examples while developing work of their own creation. The instructor’s experience in both traditional and time-based photographic narrative will provide a basis for critique and discussion. Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.
