Introduction to Watercolor

Many painting experts believe that learning the techniques of watercolor as a foundation to painting can give students a much deeper understanding when working with opaque oil or acrylic paints. This high school level watercolor class is specifically tailored to meet the needs of teen artists, with the mindset that watercolor can be both an extension of drawing and a foundation for other painting mediums. Students will learn essential skills needed to gain a full understanding of watercolor painting, including control and familiarity with the medium. Students will learn traditional and non-traditional approaches to watercolor painting, including how to transfer an existing drawing onto the base for a painting and how to execute washes and blends. Traditional techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry brush will be demonstrated, as well as experimental techniques such as mono print transfer; stamping; salting; splattering; and stenciling. Class time will be spent on demonstrations, lecture, studio time, and critique. / Open to students ages 15–18. / View complete registration policies.
