Introduction to Painting

This class is designed as a fun and exciting path to lead younger artists toward a better understanding of the basic concepts, techniques, and materials used in contemporary painting. Formal elements such as composition, measuring, and color theory will be introduced. In addition to studio work, students will be exposed to various painting styles and histories through lectures and a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The class will be introduced to terms commonly used to discuss art and will learn the value of group critique. This class will use water-based paint. / Materials fee of $5 in addition to class tuition. / Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $75-100 in total for materials (not included in tuition). / Open to students ages 12–15. Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; 26 x 20” sketch pad; two large sheets Arches and/or BKF Rives paper; 2B graphite pencil; round head paint brushes (various sizes, natural or synthetic bristles); flat head paint brushes (various sized, natural or synthetic bristles); paper palettes pad; palette knife; cup or jar for water ; acrylic paints in the following colors: Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Vermilion Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Titanium White

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
