Girl Power! Making Art You Can Use (Construction Basics)

This will be a super fun week celebrating what it means to be a girl and exploring ideas of self-expression. Discuss and journal about issues, joys, and concerns specific to girls. During the week, everyone will construct a wood toolbox for treasures, collections, art supplies, or anything you like. Each student will have a blast safely using hammers, nail guns and other tools needed for construction under the helpful supervision of the MCAD shop staff. Students will also paint a celebration or reminder mirror complete with an embossed copper plate with a meaningful saying or a reminder to be true to yourself. Throughout the week, students will learn about artists who work in wood to make large sculptures, such as Louise Nevelson and Marisol Escobar. For added inspiration, the class will take a trip to the nearby Minneapolis Institute of Art. Friday afternoon, family and friends will be invited to celebrate the week’s creative work and experiences through a celebratory exhibition! / Open to students ages 9-12.
