Design Foundation: 2D

Awareness and mastery of the principles of two-dimensional design gives creatives the ability to make their art more powerful. Whether its an experienced artist revisiting the fundamentals or an aspiring designer preparing for school, this class will provide students with an understanding of how to heighten or subdue the sense of movement, depth, and scale in their work.

The class will consist of exercises that help designers and artists to better control the forces at play in the images they create, whether they are paintings, works of graphic design, video work or photography. Learn to communicate ideas through the arrangement of dots; control the sense of space in an image; and guide the viewer through a composition. As the course progresses projects will build in complexity and in later assignments the elements of two-dimensional design will be explored through each student’s chosen medium.

There are no art-making prerequisites for this class. The emphasis on the most basic elements of creation make it a perfect laboratory for exploration. Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.
