Comic Book Writing

Students in this class will learn various approaches to, and strategies of, comic book writing. The script is the bridge between writer, artist, editor, and publisher. Students will learn to script for both themselves, and for editors, in a variety of formats and house styles. Creation of scripts for different companies and for online publication will be discussed.

Each student will completely script the following: Outline or abstract; character descriptions and histories; final script; and submission proposal. A script for an existing character and one for an original story are recommended. Students may collaborate on the same story or work independently (preferred).

The class will be taught through lectures, discussions, handouts, in-class exercises, and screened clips of discussions with industry professionals. The class has no prerequisites, though basic writing skills, an appreciation of the comics form, and an awareness of comic and/or film language will be helpful. Students may enter this class with little or no knowledge or experience and still create worthwhile scripts. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; USB drive or cloud storage option for saving work. Laptop with Word-based software is desirable, but not required. A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.
