Thesis 2023 / Yifei He '23

Yifei He '23

I was born in a rural area that was entrenched in a deeply rooted patriarchal tradition. At the time, China's one-child policy had a profound impact on society. My project is a reflection of this era, encapsulating my memories of childhood and the pain I endured as a girl. My thesis work is a collection of illustrations and comics. As an illustrator, I have created some of the "evidence" of patriarchy that existed during that time, drawing on factual evidence. In this box of memories, you will find articles cut out from newspapers discussing the one-child policy, private sales of baby boys, hiding children to avoid inspections, and the campaign to save girls. These newspaper articles offer a glimpse into the society we live in and how patriarchal policies collide with societal norms. One illustration in my project depicts an ultrasound comic of a fetus, with fantasies documenting its imagined life that ultimately ended innocently. The ultrasound image requires the viewer to look past the light to see the true horror of the situation. Growing up, I was acutely aware of the disparities between the sexes and the barriers that women faced in a patriarchal society. While other children were preoccupied with how they came into being, I was fixated on the fact that I existed in a society where girls were not welcome. I imagined various scenarios of how I came into existence, including being born from a cracked stone like in mythology or hailing from an alien planet. These imaginations formed the basis of a comic book, which has become the cornerstone of my project. Although it may appear bright and amusing, it is a reflection of the confusion I experienced about my existence. As an adult, looking back at my childhood has helped me understand some of the pain I experienced. I have come to realize that some of the unconscious and elusive factors that influenced my formative years originated from living in a patriarchal society. With the knowledge I have acquired as an adult, I have embarked on a personal project that not only helps me come to terms with my past but also provides a voice for others who may have experienced similar pain. The influence of patriarchal societies on individuals is profound, and I hope that this project resonates with viewers and helps them gain a deeper understanding of the impact of these societal norms, especially in some backward areas. But I do not force it. Because this project is deeply personal, direct, and dark, it is an opportunity for dialogue and self-reflection.
