Studio Kids is very excited to be partnering with the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center this week! Ages 9-12 Each morning an Interpretive Naturalist from the Raptor Center introduces students to one or two raptors to observe, learn about, and draw. Explore and capture the characteristics and movements of the birds, while learning about essential drawing strategies: contour, continuous line and gesture drawing. Discover several different fun media to draw with and see how they differ in their effects: drawing pencils, charcoal, ink, paper, fabric and stitching, printmaking and watercolor. The week will include a mini-field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. At the end of the week, families and friends are invited to view the students’ work at a special show. Representatives from the Raptor Center will be in person with guest raptors on Tuesday and Thursday and virtually on Monday and Wednesday. The daily schedule will include an hour of presentation and a question and answer session about the daily bird visitors, and an hour of observational drawing and art-making with birds present. The remainder of the class will be art instruction and making with the MCAD instructor. Naturalists, and their special bird guests, from the Raptor Center will be at MCAD on Friday afternoon for the family and friends exhibition. Open to students ages 9–12. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions.
