This workshop is geared towards adventurous individuals eager to explore new creative terrain and the art educator who wants to expand the way they think about drawing and mixed media. The class will consider the criteria for successful experimental work and will look at contemporary artists using experimental drawing and mixed media as their primary artistic practice. Experimentation will be key to exploring the parameters of drawing as we push the boundaries of mark making. Working from observation to the abstract, students will engage in a range of processes using traditional tools and materials in non-traditional ways, as well as using unconventional materials as a means to examine the possibilities of mark-making, space, and surfaces. Spontaneity and improvisation will be emphasized as methods of exploration in the creation of mixed media drawings as well as ephemeral works; including collage, image transfer, artists’ books, monoprints, and more. Emphasis will be placed on examining the relationship between how drawings are made and what they potentially express. To participate in this course, students will need to set-up a space in their home as a dedicated studio to work in over the week. / This class will have a ½ hour lunch break each day. / Graduate credit is available.
