Off-Campus Study
MCAD has many off-campus study opportunities. To be eligible for most programs, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must be a junior during the semester that they are off campus. Worldwide learning opportunities include:
Bauhaus Universitaet — Weimar, Germany
Founded in 1993, this program offers students the chance to work in an innovative, interdisciplinary and project-oriented environment. Students may study fine arts, media/photography or visual communication. The program also includes a one-month German-language intensive taught at the beginning of the term.
MCAD @ Burren College of Art — Ballyvaughan, Ireland
Set on the grounds of a sixteenth-century castle on Ireland's majestic Atlantic Coast, this program allows a small group of MCAD students to travel and study with an MCAD faculty member. Students develop unique visual responses to the landscape and its people. Students take one Burren studio course in painting, drawing, photography or sculpture, and the Irish Studies course. They also work directly with the MCAD professor on a self-designed project.
Fachhochschule Vorarlberg — Dornbirn, Austria
The University of Applied Sciences offers interactive media majors a chance to further their practice-oriented career goals, experience project-oriented curricula and refine their design, marketing, management and communication skills to become first-rate employees. Dornbirn is set on Lake Constance bordering Germany and Switzerland. The program also includes a German-language intensive taught at the beginning of the term.
Sozosha College of Design — Osaka, Japan
Sozosha College of Design is located in the heart of Osaka, a region historically known for its performing arts and cuisine. Surrounded by advertising agencies, newspaper and publishing companies and TV stations, students are at the hub of the latest trends in an environment providing inspiration for designers. This program is best suited for advertising, graphic design or illustration majors.
University of Brighton — Brighton, England
Located on the southern coast of England, the University of Brighton is an hour train ride from London. The program at Brighton is for students studying graphic design or illustration and who enjoy working independently within a project-oriented environment. Programs are structured to promote individual creative exploration with both faculty and an extensive roster of Great Britain's top professionals.
London College of Communication — London, England
This program at the LCC's School of Graphic Design challenges students to use active debate, scholarly investigation and intellectual curiosity to articulate the function, value and purpose of graphic design while challenging its conventions. Located near the Tate Modern and the South Bank complex in London's Elephant and Castle neighborhood, the LCC has strong links to many of the city's top design firms, retailers, publishers and broadcasting organizations.
New York Studio Residency Program — Brooklyn, NY
Frequent visits to artists' studios, the opportunity to have work critiqued by visiting artists and the chance to become immersed in the cultural resources of New York City all add to this semester-long learning experience. Select students from art schools throughout the United States work independently in a studio or in full-time internships, and meet weekly for a Contemporary Art Seminar. The semester culminates with a group exhibition in New York City.
AICAD Mobility Program — Through the Mobility Program, students can spend a semester at one of the art and design colleges in the United States affiliated with the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. This program makes the faculty, course offerings and resources of these schools available to MCAD students with ease of accessibility and without special cost.
