'Shojo Manga! Girl Power! East and West'

Keiko Takemiya, Poem of Wind and Trees.

"Shojo Manga! Girl Power! East and West" is a landmark exhibition that illuminates and celebrates the evolution of Japanese comics for girls from the postwar era to the present. Check out a gallery of images from the exhibition.

Curated by Masami Toku of California State University-Chico, this internationally touring exhibition is the first of its kind dedicated to shojo manga. Important works by historically significant manga-ka (manga=Japanese comics; ka=artists) can be seen together in MCAD Gallery, up close and off the printed page--and it's all free and open to the public.

The subtitle "East and West" refers to the fact that the Twin Cities exhibition will also feature works from emerging and established manga artists in the West, including works from the College's alumni. Additionally, the show will feature winning entries from a manga competition for high school students from throughout the region.

"The East" represents works by 23 artists who have worked in the manga category of shojo, or girls' comics, since the late 1940s, when a postwar boom developed in the production and consumption of comics in Japan. These works reflect the evolution of social roles for Japanese girls and women over the past 60 years and document how the visual composition of manga has mirrored developments in Japanese aesthetics.
